URGENT: Ask Dept of Commerce and Gov Walz to File a Stay of Construction on Line 3 TODAY
THE ISSUE
According to Native-led environmental nonprofit, Honor the Earth: “The Line 3 pipeline will cross over 200 bodies of water, inevitably poisoning rivers, wetlands, and wild rice beds. It will emit as many greenhouse gases as running 50 new coal plants 24 hours a day. If we were to get every other sector in our state to carbon neutral, we wouldn’t be able to offset the added emissions this pipeline will bring. This pipeline threatens further spread of COVID-19 when we are experiencing peak cases and hospitalizations in our state.”
The Red Lake Band of Chippewa and the White Earth Band of Ojibwea have jointly filed a motion for stay of the new Line 3 expansion project pending a decision by the Minnesota Court of Appeals.
We need Governor Walz and the Department of Commerce to ask the Minnesota Attorney General to immediately also join in this motion to stop Enbridge from building the Line 3 pipeline until the lawsuits opposing the project by the Minnesota Department of Commerce, tribal nations, and environmental groups can be heard in court. Their deadline to act is Wed, December 2nd at 4:30 PM, so please call now!
TAKE ACTION RIGHT NOW!
1. Call Governor Tim Walz.
The Governor’s number is 651-201-3400 or 800-657-3717, or for Minnesota Relay: 800-627-3529. Here is a sample script:
My name is _______, and I’m from ______(city, and say if you are a leader of a faith community, nonprofit, business, etc.). I urge you to tell the Department of Commerce to tell Attorney General Keith Ellison to seek a stay of construction on Line 3. Have him join the motion filed by the Red Lake and White Earth Bands before the deadline on Wednesday at 4:30PM.
This stay would allow the Department of Commerce’s legal appeal opposing Line 3 to be heard prior to construction. As hospitals become overwhelmed, and death rates from COVID-19 soar in Minnesota, now is not the time to welcome thousands of out-of-state workers seeking temporary construction jobs to build Line 3.
Line 3 does not fit into the economy that we have or that we dream of – it would fuel our climate crisis and damage our waterways. Please continue to stand up for Minnesotans by having the Attorney General file a stay of construction on Line 3. Thank you.
2. Call Department of Commerce Commissioners:
Grace Arnold, Temporary Commissioner
Phone:(651) 539-1441
Anne O'Connor, Chief Deputy Commissioner
Phone: (651) 539-1442
Katherine Blauvelt, Assistant Commissioner of the Division of Energy Resources
Phone: (651) 539-1827
Aditya Ranade PhD. Deputy Commissioner of Energy Resources
Phone: (651) 539-1801
